Anyone can wear a striking hat to Ascot, but to look truly classy, you need an appropriate bag as well (especially if you will be hanging out in the winners’ enclosure).
For many visitors to Ascot on Ladies’ Day, the bag is merely arm-candy (though the capacity to store a pair of flipflops in there might be wise if you’re wearing killer heels). Serious racegoers, however, might need space for binoculars, notebooks and room to stash their winnings. Then of course there are those whose bag must accommodate a Thermos and sandwiches…
Should you go for understated elegance? Or turn the tables on the hatted mob and wear minimal headwear but carry a gloriously outrageous handbag? Should your bag match your hat, or simply blend in with your dress? Are you trying to get your picture in the papers? Or perhaps avoid getting your picture in the papers (in that “what on earth was she thinking?” section)?
Whatever your sartorial approach to Ascot, we have some great suggestions for the perfect bag to take to the races. Check out Mel Boteri, Jane Goodchild and Joanna Maxham for classy, classic clutches. If your bag is to be the main feature of your outfit, Maria Lamanna is great for “look at me” bags. And if you’re going for the Thermos and sarnies approach, you might need a backpack or a bigger bag, such as this beautiful example from V°73.
