Sophie McElligott is a stylist, illustrator and a designer of headbands, dubbed by Vogue as “Little Crowns.” We talked to the fashion-savvy artist to find out what her handbag really says about her…
What is your favourite bag?
My favourite bag is a gold Salvatore Ferragamo cross-body bag that I’ve had for ages. The lovely gold leather and old fashioned appeal means it’s dainty enough for evenings. It’s also quite roomy and with its long strap it makes for the perfect hands-free day bag too.
Aside from keys, phone and purse what are the three essentials that you always carry in your handbag?
I always have my mini Smythson diary, a stash of pens and a red lipstick. Simple.
Where is the most unusual place your handbag has been?
In my lifetime it’s had a lot of late nights, a few trips to India, the Middle East and Europe and a sleepover at a police station after I lost it and it was miraculously handed in. Before me it spent a lifetime with my German grandmother, so it had a whole secret life before me.
What will your next handbag be?
My next bag is either something by Olympia Le-Tan whose bags I just adore, or this fab lacquered wooden clutch by Charlotte Olympia. Something a little bit classic, a little bit romantic and vaguely theatrical.
Sophie’s work is inspired by the Renaissance culture of dress and her taste in bags follows suit. Classic, stylish and with a interesting history we would say Sophie is the perfect Vintage Queen. Check out Sophie’s designs at www.sophie-mcelligott.com or follow her on twitter @sophmcelligott
