Last widely used in Britain in the 1950s, the satchel was part of traditional school uniforms but had grown out of fashion by the 1960s despite their history dating back as far as 1600. Shakespeare’s As You Like It, first performed in 1600, referenced the bag: “Then they whining school-boy, with his satchel / And shining morning face, creeping like a snail / Unwillingly to school.”
This quote taken from the 1600s and its continued use in the 20th century highlights its position in British heritage with it being an undeniable classic piece and possibly one of the longest standing styles in fashion. By the early ’90s, satchels had evolved into more modern messenger bags and even influenced early styles of the man bag and contemporary rucksack trends. Traditionally it is crafted from soft leather and has two buckle fastenings on the exterior as well as an outside pocket making it perfect for practicality.
The Cambridge Satchel Company has recently become well-known for its contemporary satchel handbags. Founded in 2008, Cambridge Satchel Company designs are based on traditional English school bags and are now sold worldwide in a range of colours and sizes. They can be spotted on many of its celebrity fans including Alexa Chung and Elle Fanning as well as many members of the Great British public.
Bloomingdale’s New York even described the design as the “Brit ‘it’ bag,” a proud nod towards British contemporary fashion.
