Summer Wedding Bag Dilemmas Solved!

Summer wedding season is upon us, and with it all the usual dilemmas.  What to wear?  Mustn’t clash with the bridesmaids, or upstage the bride.  Try not to look like the mother of the bride (unless you are the mother of the bride, of course), but equally not look too sexy or flirty to be seen in church.  Need heels to look elegant, but don’t want to sink into the lawn at the reception.  What if it rains?  Try to look summery and feminine, without freezing to death or having goosepimples in the photos (quite a challenge in the UK).  Aaaargh, why can’t they just elope?!

We won’t even go into all the tricky etiquette of suitable wedding gifts or how to deal with ex-spouses…

Let’s focus on the positives of summer weddings: joyful occasions, summer weather (we hope), the rare chance to wear a wonderful hat, and, of course, an excuse for a new handbag!

Bearing in mind all the style considerations above, there are also some practical wedding handbag requirements.  Room for a hankie or several packs of tissues is a MUST if you are at all liable to tears.  Being waterproof, or at least sufficiently so to not become tearstained, is also a useful feature.  A bag large enough to contain the all-important wedding invitation with directions to the church will help prevent your own relationship breaking down on the journey.  And don’t forget the confetti!

If it’s one of those weddings where the photographer seems to take for ever and lunch does not happen until teatime, space for snacks could be a good idea.  (The author of this post knows all about needing to keep bloodsugar levels under control, and is currently of the opinion that a good wedding handbag should be able to contain at least half a dozen mini Babybel cheeses, perhaps more if you have small nephews with you).

Having talked about needing enough space in the bag, just don’t get one so spacious and full of stuff that when your mobile phone rings at full volume with a comedy ringtone in the middle of the service, you can’t find it to switch it off…
